America’s lag-time in alternative energy

I just blogged about San Francisco applying for a permit to build an offshore wave farm to generate electricity. That’s but the second step after deciding to try this tech. It’s many more steps before anything is actually placed in the Pacific. And this is San Francisco, positioned next to Silicon Valley which has been a major center of tech innovation in the U.S. since the days of the first transistor. America’s alternative energy lag is partially due to the level of energy innovation. Also, we’ve recently had a federal government that was sgtrongly pro-petroleum and not truly interested in pushing for alternatives. The amount of money spent on occupying oil-rich Iraq is huge compared to all funding that went into anything remotely related to alternative energy. So now we Yanks are behind the curve.

So where must we turn to find out what’s happening on a practical level in alternative energy? Diminutive Portugal, where wild horses and tamed wind can be found side-by-side.

Portugal alfready has a small, but still the world’s largest, functioning wave farm. It uses Pelamis floats from Scotland and the natural ups and downs of the Atlantic Ocean. Portugal has as much coastline per capita as you could desire. The coastline also provides plenty of wind power when it’s combined with Portugal’s rugged terrain. Here’s a recent summary of the move to alternative energy in Portugal. It has no oil, no coal, and was too poor back when nuclear was the non-fossil-fuel alternative. They also have a remarkably sunny climate in the southern region, similar to the American Southwest. They’re devloping plenty of solar projects. Most of this is a combo of government support and private enterprise. In the energy world Portugal reminds me of the poorer nations that went straight from no telephones to wireless Internet and cell phones.

As you look through the work being done in Portugal you realize that the U.S. is simply not a serious player right now in global alternative energy, except as a customer. Portugal, BTW, expects to get 60% of its energy from alternative sources by 2020. Along with Denmark it will be league leader in NOT using petroleum, natural gas, or coal…and in being self-sufficient. Of course, it is a small country with a population the size of Los Angeles County and a GDP about half of the U.S.

Timeline

America’s Great Depression is regarded as having begun in 1929 with the Stock Market crash, and ended in 1941 with America’s entry into World War II. However, to fully understand the Great Depression, one must look at it in context of events that happened before and after those dates. For that reason, the timeline below includes events many decades before and after the Great Depression itself.Several types of events are covered in the timeline below. The first is the passage of legislation that effects either the money supply, international trade, or price and wage controls. The second is important publications about economics. The third is business cycle peaks and troughs. The last is significant political and social events.

Обама сказал время брать акции и хоть ты сдохни потом, а покажись на пару дней, ралли.
Не подрывай авторитет Верховного Главнокомандующего Возрождением Америки.

И вы ж понимаете, стоит только заявиться ралли, тотчас же
инфляция скакнет так что ой-ей-ей и все сырье зашкалит былые годмансаксовые двести
долларов за баррель.

Это вполне возможный вариант если сработает стимул Обамы.
А ведь он таки сработает.
Именно сейчас наконец сошлись две кривых в одном месте -
число верящих что Америка на верном пути и наоборот.

Никогда в истории не было такого драматического скачка вверх верящих в светлое будущее при смене правительства,
факт обнадеживающий весьма.

Так что медопутам надо сделать как Каддафи – разогнать и уничтожить правительство как таковое в силу
полной невозможности избавить его от коррупции и напрямую передать все нефтебаксы в руки
народу.

РАЗДАТЬ СТАБФОНД!

with Russia’s state nuclear firm Rosatom to create a joint venture for building nuclear power plants.

According to the memorandum of understanding, Rosatom will hold a 50%
stake plus one share in the joint venture.

Siemens made the move just weeks after it said it will step out of the Areva
NP nuclear power joint venture it holds with France’s Areva SA.

Росатом и Россию можно поздравить, вот это действительно серьезный успех
и даже прорыв.

Поясню – избежать в той или форме введения штрафов на CO2 невозможно,
это будет и Китай с Индией тем или иным способом в систему будут встроены тоже.

Никаких «альтернативных» источников энергоснабжения,
способных заменить
нынешние, в ближайшие лет надцать близко не видно -
это факт 100%.
Надеяться на прорыв можно и нужно, но оснований пока для него нет никаких.

Остается только ядерная энергетика, которая требует
1) капиталовложений гигантских, которых ни у кого нет,
2) технологий, которые есть только у французов (лучшие, но дорогие),
японцев(сравнимы с французами, на 20% дешевле и
возможны государственные финансовые гарантии),
и русских (??? но может быть и пойдет для стран третьего мира).

Смычка с немцами решает для русских массу проблем,
в том числе и возможные кредиты на постройку для клиентов
со стороны немецких банков. Французы же со своими
красивыми реакторами и гонором идут в то самое место,
куда они так вкусно едят.

Неправда!
Был и позитив, только само собой не про

из Алабамы,
сток-пикеров типа Баффета и технических трейдеров по узорам на крыльях бабочек.
